Star Sapphires are much like Star Rubies because they exhibit "asterisms" which means that when directly viewed under a light source, the stone manifests a six-rayed star. To see the asterism exhibit at its best, it is important to tilt and rotate the gemstone. While the word Sapphire might suggest only blue-hued gemstones, Star Sapphires come in a variety of pink, purple, and orange shades. The most famous kind of Star Sapphires is found in Thailand due to its golden asterisms. Gemstones of this kind are generally opaque and are cut into a cabochon shape to enhance the asterism. These stones are from South East Asia specifically in Sri Lanka, Myanmar, Cambodia.
